What is Telehealth?

Updated: Dec 14, 2020

What exactly is Telehealth? Why is everyone talking about it? Telehealth. Telemedicine. Teletherapy?

Telehealth is essentially like "FaceTiming" with your doctor, but instead of FaceTime, your doctor is using a secure program where your data and health information is protected. Telehealth is a broad term used to describe any health-related service or information provided virtually or remotely. If your medical doctor is the one providing a virtual service, that service is called Telemedicine. If your psychologist is providing virtual therapy, it's called Teletherapy. Telehealth is just a catchall to describe virtual healthcare services. The prefix, "tele-" is defined as "from a long distance," just as in "telephone."

Since Covid-19, our lives have been flipped upside down. There is no question about that. So much has changed, including how we receive help from our healthcare providers. At this time, we cannot walk into our doctors' offices without fear of potentially jeopardizing the health of ourselves or others. This is our new reality. For that reason, healthcare providers need an alternative and safe way of providing their services. They now provide many of their services virtually, via Telehealth, to limit the amount of clients and patients walking through their doors. Telehealth has been used for a long time, but it has never been used as frequently as it is today, for obvious reasons.

What is it Like Doing a Telehealth Session with Me?

My name is Dr. Shina Halavi. I'm a pediatric and adult neuropsychologist and licensed psychologist. I provide therapy and neuropsychological assessment via telehealth. So, how does it work?

I use a secure and HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform when working with my clients. What does that mean exactly? That means that the video platform I use protects my clients' data and health information so that their information stays private and secure.

Through my website, you can book a free consultation with me. You can choose to book either a phone or video consult. Once you have scheduled an appointment, you will receive an email confirmation.

If you scheduled a video appointment with me, you will receive an email with a link on how to join the session right before your appointment time. The message will look like this...

Once you click that link to join, the video session will open up in your browser, and you will see me...

That's it! You can now continue your virtual session. No need to download any apps, programs, or softwares. Simple! Nurture your mental health from the comfort of your own home.
